With mental toughness and the right attitude the brain can overcome great physical disadvantages. I think here of Professor Stephen Hawking, or of the extraordinary bravery of men and women who have lost limbs in the service of their country. For many of these heroes, pain is a constant presence that requires a continuous effort to control and overcome.

But there is no point in obstructing yourself with unnecessary handicaps. If you are in the fortunate position of not having to expend energy overcoming physical disabilities, do not allow yourself to get into a shape whereby you have to start doing so. An unnecessary lack of fitness makes it harder to achieve what you need. Give your body – and thus your brain – the dietary fuel that it needs to function well. You do not deliberately fill your car with low-octane leaded petrol when it runs best on high-octane unleaded. Look after your body – and thus your brain – by providing it with the rest and relaxation that it needs. And exercise both body and brain often enough so that neither lets the other down. If you do have any physical problems, do not worry about the things you are unable to do but concentrate on the things you can do.

There is a great deal of wisdom in the old Latin saying ‘mens sana in corpore sano’ – a healthy brain in a healthy body. Getting this right is one of the most important basics to which I have just referred. If you look fit, well and energised, you will immediately make a good impression on those around you.
